AT THE TURNING -
A Winter Solstice Fireside Gathering
Gathering in the darkness, tending the returning light.
There is something ancient about gathering around a fire near the Winter Solstice—the longest nights of the year, when the living world has drawn deeply inward.
Winter offers us something our busy lives rarely do: an invitation to slow down, rest deeply, and listen. And yet this season can also be full—of gatherings, expectations, preparations, and the many ways we keep ourselves moving when perhaps some part of us is longing simply to be still.
At the Turning is an evening to honour both.
We’ll gather fireside to breathe, practise caring awareness, share conversation and silence, and reflect gently on the year that has been—what we may be ready to lay down, what we want to carry forward, and what might be quietly beginning.
We’ll warm ourselves with spiced tea and apples baked over the fire, letting food, warmth, and fire be part of the simple pleasure of gathering together on a winter night.
And, weather permitting, we’ll wander away from the fire for a while and into the winter darkness. Perhaps the moon will meet us there—the snow glistening in its light, the long shadows of the trees stretching across the land—as we take a slow, moonlit walk and experience the particular stillness of a winter night.
The Solstice reminds us that darkness is not something we need to hurry through. There are gifts here too: rest, quiet, mystery, reflection, and the possibility of renewal.
And somewhere within the longest nights, almost imperceptibly, the turning begins.
The Earth turns.
The days begin to lengthen.
The light returns.
